SAFE YOUTH DIVERSION PROJECT AND FAB CDP, COOLCOTTS, WEXFORD:

The SAFE Youth Diversion Project has been based in FAB CDP for over
**Apply on the website** years. Its area of operation is the Wexford
Garda District and is primarily focused on the Wexford town urban area
and the rural areas of Bridgetown and Rosslare. SAFE is funded by the
Irish Youth Justice Service and the European Union European Social
Fund. SAFE currently employs 2 fulltime staff with a Project
Coordinator and a Project worker.

The SAFE YDP is a key part of the FAB CDP Child and Family Project
which is based in Coolcotts, Wexford Town. FAB (Ferndale, Ashfield and
Belvedere) was originally established to work in these 3 areas but now
operates across Wexford town. FAB CDP is managed by a Voluntary Board
of Management and is a company with CHY status, limited by Guarantee
and compliant with the Charities Regulatory Authority.

FAB?s main areas of work are

* Early Years Services
* Community based Family Support

The SAFE Youth Diversion Project works through the Restorative Justice
Process. The successful candidate will be joining an effective team,
not just in SAFE but across all FAB Programmes and the ethos of the
SAFE Youth Diversion Project is a core element informing best
practice, team work, relationships with families, schools, the Gardai
and others to bring about a sustainable outcome for the child, the
family and the community.

YOUTH DIVERSION PROJECTS

Youth Diversion Projects are Community based, multi-agency youth crime
diversion initiatives which primarily seek to divert young people who
have been involved in anti-social and/or criminal behaviour by
providing needs led activities to facilitate personal development,
promote civic responsibility and improve long term employability
prospects. The projects may also work with young people who are
significantly at risk of becoming involved in anti-social and/or
criminal behaviour. By doing so, the projects contribute to improving
the quality of life within communities and enhancing Garda/community
relations. This is a very exciting opportunity for candidates with an
interest and capability in this type of work.

The aim of this **Apply on the website** initiative is to reduce young
people?s involvement in anti-social behaviour and prevent their
involvement in crime through the creation of a wraparound intensive
programme and engagement with youth work programmes. This position
will be part of the core SAFE Youth Justice Project.

This initiative will be a community based preventative service working
primarily with young people aged **Apply on the website** who have
been identified by the Garda?, or schools, T?sla (Social work and
Tusla Education Support Service, and existing YDP staff, as being at
serious risk of becoming involved in crime or anti- social behaviour
and are too young to be considered for admission to a YDP. The service
will work with these young people, to promote pro-social behaviour and
guide them to make informed decisions and positive life choices. There
will be an emphasis on promoting school attendance and performance, as
well as encouragement in extra-curricular activities with a pro-social
focus. Appropriate interventions for working with this age cohort
might include resilience building in the younger child, peer
influences; decision making; communications skills, anger management;
conflict management; Building a child's self-esteem. Interventions
will also include engagement with the child?s family, providing
support and tools to assist parent(s) in dealing with their child?s
behaviour.

* who are younger siblings of primary referrals to the SAFE YDP
* whose parents and wider family are engaged in behaviours likely to
lead to criminal justice sanction
* who have come to the attention of local Garda?
* who are presenting with behavioural concerns in the home, school
and community.
* those who are experiencing issues in relation to school attendance
and attainment, antisocial behaviour, emotional regulation,
communication, attitude and impulsivity.

The posts will provide intensive community support for at risk
children and young people, through developmental and practical
supports.

Youth Diversion Projects are co-funded by the Government of Ireland
and the European Social Fund and by the Irish Youth Justice Service,
and The SAFE Youth Justice Project in collaboration with the support
and advice of An Garda Sioch?na, through the SAFE Advisory Committee
and the SAFE Referral Committee.

KEY RESPONSIBILITIES

The Project Worker (**Apply on the website** yrs.) will be employed
part time (**Apply on the website**.5 hours) for a fixed term
contract, subject to a six months probationary period and funding.

The core elements of this position of SAFE Youth Justice worker for 8
to **Apply on the website** year old?s will be to work as part of
the SAFE YDP / FAB team to engage with children, their families,
schools, Gardai and Tusla through relationship building,
communication, interventions and actions based on identified need and
through Restorative prat ices. In particular, this work will include:

* Assessing and responding to the needs of young people aged **Apply
on the website** years old in accordance with SAFE YDP / FAB policy
and procedures.
* Engaging identified young people in a process of learning and
development that will enable them to examine their own behaviours and
to make positive lifestyle choices that will protect them from
involvement in criminal, harmful or socially unacceptable behaviours
* Engaging with young people who are known to the Garda? and the
community and are at risk of offending, on both a one-to-one and group
level.
* Designing, implementing and evaluating outcomes focused
interventions for 8 to **Apply on the website** year old?s
* Engaging with and supporting parents, guardians and family members
to engage effectively with their young person to facilitate positive
behaviour change.
* Building and maintaining relationships with local stakeholders,
particularly schools, An Garda S?och?na and Tusla and other services
engaged with young people in the catchment area.
* Working as a key member of the SAFE YDP Project team in all
aspects of the work including Support and Supervision, regular reports
and updates on the work to the SAFE Project Coordinator, participating
and supporting relevant FAB family and community initiatives.

PROFESSIONAL QUALIFICATIONS AND EXPERIENCE (E=ESSENTIAL; D=DESIRABLE)

* Education to Degree standard preferably in Youth / Justice /
Education / Health Promotion work (E)

be considered in lieu of degree qualifications)
* 1 year experience in a YDP or similar role. (E)

* Access to a car and full Irish driving license (E)
* Relevant paid or voluntary experience of working with young people

* Exposure and understanding of YDP work and of working with young
people from minority ethnic groups (D)

ADDITIONAL CONSIDERATIONS FOR THE ROLE

FUNDING: It must be understood that if the funding for the post is
discontinued the post holder?s contract may be terminated.

GARDA VETTING: As our work involves contact with young people,
candidates under consideration for employment will be subject to Garda
vetting.

ANNUAL LEAVE: The Project Worker will be entitled to **Apply on the

HOURS OF WORK: The Project Worker will be expected to work a minimum
